We are beginning work on the Research Paper

On 3/27 you should have print-outs of 3 sources on your happiness research topic (print outs of full articles, physical books, printed descriptions of documentaries, etc.)

Use the SCCC Library database, rather than Google or Google Scholar.

Also, a reminder, 3/27 is the last date to turn in revised essays (School and Happiness) for a changed grade.  Follow all revision policies in syllabus

Paper Revision Guidelines

All revisions to the 1st paper are due (printed, stapled and according to policy) no later than Friday 3/27 at noon.  Here are the guidelines from the syllabus
++++++++++++++++++++

APPENDIX II: Dr. McCormick’s Voluntary Paper Revision Guidelines

Any student may re-write a passing essay in hopes of raising their grade.  I recommend consulting with me during office hours and/or with a tutor in the Writing Center.

To be resubmitted, revised papers must:

  1. demonstrate substantial change.  Papers where teacher’s corrections are merely transcribed – or those that offer only minimal edits – will not receive higher grades.
  2. be attached to the corrected original copy with teacher’s marks.
  3. be turned in to professor within two weeks of the date it was returned to the student or by the final day of class (whichever is earlier).
  4. include an additional 250-or-more word typed description of the changes made and the rationale for these edits.  If they failed to incorporate any of the teacher’s suggestions into the revision, students should address the reason(s) they chose not to do so.
  5. exclude no more than 2 of the corrections on the original for grammar, syntax, spelling, etc.

There are no exceptions to these conditions

Week of Feb 4th

Weds - Reviewing Introduction to Understanding Rhetoric

Fri - Make up Essay #1 Day (Students who were in class 1/30 and wrote essay then are excused from class)

HW due Weds (2/11) of next week:
  • Understanding Rhetoric - Read Chapter 1 and take 3-5 pages handwritten notes

A helpful resource on taking study notes.

Still have pages to fill up.  Here are just a few other ways to use them:

  • Predictions:  Before you read, judging only by the title and other obvious material, what do you think the chapter will be about?  Will it connect to something you learned earlier in life (Hs?)?
  • Personal Examples:  Are there experiences you've had/ seen/ heard where the principles of rhetoric and composition were made clear?  Any that conrtadicted them?
  • Visualizations:  Graphing or charting certain ideas visually can really help one understand them at a deeper level.
  • Meta-analysis:  What do you think about the WAYS the materials are being presented?

Welcome Spring 2015.

For your weekend homework (Due Weds 1/28), you'll work on Fragments and Comma Splices And Fused Sentences
Be sure to keep track of your answers. You can use the worksheets provided - or your own record - to keep track of your answers (and to submit to me).

After this, you'll revise your three paragraphs written for today's class, taking all you've learned about paragraph construction and sentence structure into consideration.
