8.2 PLANNING SESSION

Planning a project is a lot like planning a paper: today we do both!

Monday, October 21, 2013

8.1 The Art (and Science) of Persuasion

Week 8, Day 1: The Art of Persuasion

I.  Write a paragraph in which you try your hardest to convince someone to give you something you want.  It can be serious or silly, but make sure its not so personal that you won't feel comfortable sharing it.

II. Sharing stories, listing rhetorical techniques onthe board.

You don't have to beg for what you want......Use persuasion!
III. Aristotle's ideas:  Ethos, Pathos, Logos, Telos and Kairos

IV.  Science of Persuasion

V. Connecting it all to the assignment.

HW: Think about how you will structure your persuasive essay to convince the employer/or college admission officer to give you what you want.  Come up with at least one "angle" -in the form of a sentence - for each of the following concepts.  Some will be easier than others, but try them all. In the end, you'll only use the ones that work.  For now, stretch your creativity and intelligence to find something for each one.

a) ethos
b) logos
c) pathos
d) telos
e) kairos
f) reciprocity
g) scarcity
h) authority
i) consistancy
j) liking
k) consensus

Sad news: I can't make it to class tomorrow (Thursday 10/10).  I will miss you and am sorry for the late notice. I will understand if you are devastated.

Instead of class, I'm giving you a little assignment. Your homework is to watch the following video and then to write a short 200 word response linking one or more of the speaker's ideas with your personal experiences. This writing is of the get-it-on-paper variety.  It will not be graded beyond the fact that it is done or not done.
